Crest of the God of Scholarship

This family crest is said to have originated as the crest of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, where Sugawara no Michizane is enshrined. As the Tenjin faith, which deifies Michizane, spread throughout Japan, so too did this crest. The plum is famous as the flower loved by Sugawara no Michizane, the god of scholarship, and various plum family crests are used at Tenjin shrines nationwide.
