This gift box is made from banana paper.
Using fibers from banana trees grown in Zambia, Africa, the paper is made at a traditional Echizen washi paper factory in Japan, and each box is handcrafted by Japanese artisans.
Designer Haru visited the banana paper factory twice during their student years, traveling to Zambia and also spending several days observing the Echizen washi paper factory in Japan.

The journey to Zambia will forever remain in my memory.
In Zambia, banana paper has brought jobs to impoverished villages where there was no work, created industry, enriched nature, and reduced the poaching of precious wildlife, child labor, crime, and environmental destruction.
I was shocked to learn that there were places where young children had to work or engage in poaching and crime to survive, but I was also moved to discover that Japan had the technology to change such environments.
"I want to use this banana paper when I start my own business someday."
After 12 years, this dream has finally come true.
