This pattern originates from the gagaku piece "Seigaiha," danced by Hikaru Genji in the Tale of Genji. The pattern evokes the blessings of the vast ocean, and is an auspicious motif that embodies wishes for happiness that will continue forever like the endless waves, and a peaceful life like the gentle waves.
